About the project

This project will focus on developing a heterogeneous SiN-GaAs platform for a coherent Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) LiDAR operating at the 1-?m wavelength band.

FMCW LiDAR systems transfer optical energy through the emission, reflection and detection of laser beams to achieve precise distance and velocity measurements.  This information can be used for autonomous navigation, obstacle detection and situational awareness. As such, they are a powerful tool for autonomous vehicles and surveillance.

The main objectives of this project are:

  • to design and optimise the key components of a FMCW LiDAR system through simulations, including on-chip lasers, modulators, amplifiers, and photoreceivers
  • to develop the manufacturing processes for the designed components using advanced fabrication techniques on a heterogeneous SiN-GaAs platform
  • to thoroughly characterize the fabricated components and evaluate their performance
  • to demonstrate a fully functional 1-?m FMCW LiDAR system on-chip

This project will involve device simulation and design, followed by process development and fabrication using our advanced cleanroom facility. Device characterisation will be performed in our silicon photonics laboratory and in collaboration with our industry partner, QinetiQ.

You will develop novel research to shape the future of energy transfer technologies in areas such as, integrated photonics, laser integration, and long-range sensing. You will undertake this project within the EPSRC Energy Transfer Technologies Doctoral Training Hub.

The Doctoral Hub specialises in developing research and training the next generation of leaders in energy transfer technologies for defence and related sectors. You will be based at the University of 天发娱乐棋牌_天发娱乐APP-官网|下载, and you will benefit from the support and expertise of our diverse academic community, a community of students working towards similar goals, as well as our specialist industrial network.

Within the Hub you will be partnered with an industry collaborator, providing placement opportunities to work and train alongside industry experts. The Hub offers a blend of academic and industrial training, preparing you for diverse career pathways in research or industry. You will join a vibrant cohort of PhD students that conduct research with academic leaders across leading UK institutions. Engage in online and face-to-face activities, including cohort-building events and collaborative learning exercises.

天发娱乐棋牌_天发娱乐APP-官网|下载 industrial partner, QinetiQ, is a major international company that develops innovative solutions to current and future challenges in defence and security. This partner will provide PhD supervision, a placement and be part of the larger Hub community benefiting in the diverse academic and industrial network offered by the Hub.
