Roadshow Awards 2016

The annual review, celebration and awards for the Bringing Research to Life Roadshow took place on Thursday 17th November 2016.

The Awards were presented by Professor S. Mark Spearing, Vice President (Research & Enterprise), Chair of the Engaged University Steering Group.

RESEARCH COMMUNICATOR AWARDS

  • Duncan Parker (Chemistry)

From the Award citation: "This researcher is someone we noticed early in the year who had a great way with questions and worked well with people of all ages."

  • Chihiro Masusawa (Water & Environmental Engineering Group, Engineering and the Environment)

From the Award citation: "Chihiro joined an experienced engagement team and settled in very quickly, becoming a valued member of the team – it’s very clear that the public find [her] easy to talk to about complex ideas "

  • Abi Linton (Mathematics)

From the Award citation: "[she] works on what might be seen by some as a ‘difficult’ topic for research engagement but who manages to share the joy of her research with anyone lucky enough to hear what she has to say. She is also a natural science (well, maths) busker and in part this award is to recognise that skill."

  • Matt Short (International Centre for Ecohydraulics Research (ICER), Engineering and the Environment)

From the Award citation: "... relatively new to engagement activities but who took it to like the proverbial duck to water. It’s quite a skill to present with the same level of enthusiasm and attention to questions at both ends of a busy day – but [Matt] had a well-thought-through summary of his research and kept it fresh all the time he was ‘live’."

  • Arshad Emmambux (Mathematics)

Award citation: "One of a growing pool of people from across the University who have found the Roadshow experience so worthwhile that they offer their time beyond their own immediate specialisms. ... Consistently able to give engaged and considered responses to both the most direct and the most left-field questions, this person brings a natural enthusiasm to the Roadshow. ... a brilliant all-round communicator."

CREATIVE ACTIVITY DESIGN AWARD

  • The Materials team

From the Award citation: "... a team who have been with us for a couple of years but brought something new, creative, educational, engaging and downright fun to 2016 – this award goes to the Materials team for their Candy Crusher."
