Recognition for staff and students involved in Science & Engineering Day 2016
Following our best ever Science & Engineering Day on Saturday 12 March, staff and students from the large (750 strong) and varied team who contributed to the event gathered at a celebratory party and awards evening. Congratulations go to the many individuals and teams who were nominated by the public, fellow organisers, contributors and volunteers; from these nominations, the following exceptional contributions to the event were recognised:
Best Activity (by public/visitor vote) - the Mars Bar Bridge Building Challenge

Best Communicator Award
Ian Tinkler (Chemistry), noiminated for his 'dedication to education and natural ability to engage'
The Accelerate! team (Physics and Astronomy), nominated for 'brilliant commuincation with their interactive particle physics show'
Student Ambassador Award
Natalie Hargrave and Nicola Doley, nominated for being 'welcoming, approachable, capable and helpful ... [taking] an overview of what was going on and managing the flow of people with ease'
Volunteer Award
Andy Giles (Engineering and the Environment), nominated for being 'unfailingly positive and helpful' and that 'his contribution to the success of SOTSEF is incalculable'
Nadine Hill and Diana Dias-Fernandes (Chemistry), nominated for dedicating 'much time to making our activities a success well before the day ... and were equally dedicated pn the day to ensuring our activities were effective'
Commitment Award
Alex Pryor (Archaeology). nominated for having 'an amazing vision to create a very immersive "archaeology village" experience'
Tina Horsfall (MRC), nominated for 'the relentless work she puts in to organising the MRC activity ... and encouraging other staff to volunteer'
Elizabeth McCaig (LR), nominated for being 'instrumental in taking the lead and motivating Lloyd's Register staff members to attend, volunteer and give their suppport'
Innovation Award
Christopher Gutteridge (Open Data Service), nominated for?using 'his expertise and a great deal of effort to create a wholly new and very popular activity around Minecraft mapping – a breath of fresh air'
Claire Jackson (Medicine), nominated for ‘for?creating a?fun?event with visitors modelling cilia but also producing the video of that mocdelling to use as a future?engagement?tool.’
Collaboration Award
Science Buskers, nominated for ?‘working with a range of people within the Science Room framework, entertaining crowds and queue-busting’

Nano Team, noiminated for? 'introducing how fun and impactful engineering can be’
Icarus Team, nominated for ?giving ‘hundreds of talks to interested parents and kids about wingsuits, something that very few had ever heard about – a completely innovative project unlike any other’
