About the Centre for Earth Research and Analysis 天发娱乐棋牌_天发娱乐APP-官网|下载 (CERAS)

Centre for Earth Research and Analysis 天发娱乐棋牌_天发娱乐APP-官网|下载 (CERAS) is a world-class facility for the chemical and isotopic analysis of natural and anthropogenic materials.

The instruments and techniques available can be applied to a diverse range of applications including environmental, geological, ecological, nuclear, medical, archaeological and oceanographic.

The facility is used for a wide range of research purposes and commercial analysis.

Highlights

  • We can analyse samples in bulk or in situ using our laser ablation systems. Geochemical imaging is also available.
  • The abundance, distribution and stable isotopic composition of organic molecules can be determined in our organic geochemistry labs.
  • We have a track record of carrying out commercial analyses and working with users to develop new approaches for novel applications.
  • We have experience analysing a broad range of sample materials from archaeological, biomedical to nuclear samples.
  • We can determine the isotope ratio or concentration of >80% of the naturally occurring elements in rocks, sediments and water.

Technical specification

We are a very well-equipped facility with a dedicated and experienced team of support staff and technicians. The facility consists of the following equipment and laboratory spaces:

  • several ICP-MS (Thermo X-SERIES 2, Agilent 8900, Thermo Scientific Element 2XR) for high-throughput elemental analysis via solution or solid sample introduction using the laser
  • a Time-of-Flight ICP-MS (Nu Instruments Vitesse) for ultra-rapid, wide mass range acquisition, ideal for applications such as laser ablation imaging and nanoparticle analysis
  • Thermal Ionisation mass spectrometer (Thermo Scientific Triton Plus) for high precision isotope analysis
  • three Multi-collector ICP-MS (Thermo Scientific Neptune and Neptune Plus, Neoma MS/MS) for high-sensitivity isotope analysis of solutions or solid samples using the laser
  • two Laser Ablation Systems (ESI Lasers NWR193 and Teledyne Iridia) for micro-sampling and 2D imaging of solid samples coupled to any of our ICP systems
  • a Micro drill (New Wave Micromill) for precise micron-scale sampling of solid materials for subsequent geochemical and/or isotopic analysis
  • Class 100 Clean Chemistry Laboratories for sample preparation and purification prior to geochemical and/or isotopic analysis
  • Particle Characterisation (Asymmetric Flow Field-Flow Fractionation; AF4) of the size of nanoparticles, polymers, and proteins (ranging in size from 1nm to 10microns).  It can be coupled to a wide range of instruments such as our range of ICP.
  • Carbon Sequestration Laboratory to study water-rock interaction processes related to carbon capture and storage
  • Organic Geochemistry Laboratories designed to characterise organic matter from the environment and the geological record
  • GAU-Radioanalytical a long-established commercial group providing radioanalytical services, consultancy and research support for government, industrial (nuclear and environmental) and academic sectors
  • NNUF-EXACT part of the National Nuclear Users Facility enabling research and training in accelerated nuclear characterisation and remediation technologies
