The evolution of written symbolic communication: the autonomous development of visual symbolic systems in artificial agents
This PhD project explores how artificial agents can autonomously develop symbolic communication systems, resembling human alphabets or logograms, purely through interaction. Building on previous studies in sketch-based communication, the project investigates how agents might evolve compact, meaningful symbols, potentially mirroring early human writing systems, that enable efficient exchange of information. -

This project will develop novel techniques to enhance the physical layer performance of 5G non-terrestrial networks. In particular, Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) techniques for exploiting inter-beam interference and for user-specific beamforming can be used for enhancing capacity and coverage. -

Biomedical control systems
Developing effective, inexpensive systems for stroke rehabilitation is an urgent, worldwide problem. This project will develop rehabilitation systems that use functional electrical stimulation (FES) to artificially activate muscles via surface electrodes placed on the skin. You will design the controllers and test them with patients in collaboration with physiotherapists and clinicians. -

Polyoxometalate memories for low-power AI hardware
This PhD project focuses on using polyoxometalates (POMs) to develop next-generation nanoscale devices for memory and neuromorphic computing. Leveraging POMs' unique electronic properties, you will design and optimise devices for high stability, energy efficiency, and scalability. Applications include AI hardware and energy-efficient, real-time processing for edge devices. -

Wideband fibre optical parametric amplifiers for space division multiplexing technology
This project aims at developing a novel idea of fibre optical multimode parametric amplification where four-wave-mixing between different fibre modes is exploited to amplify several modes in a wide bandwidth covering the main telecom windows (C+L bands). This is done through the design of novel optical fibres having special refractive-index profile.
