S Poole Poster

New molecular tests for pneumonia much more rapidly detect microorganisms causing disease than conventional diagnostics.

The team retrospectively tested sputum from two patients hospitalised with pneumonia, and interrogated their medical records, to see whether these new molecular tests could facilitate better antimicrobial stewardship.

They concluded that rapid molecular tests do have the potential to improve antibiotic usage in pneumonia, an area of huge antibiotic consumption globally.
