Dr Thomas Lloyd is?Visiting Researcher within?Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of 天发娱乐棋牌_天发娱乐APP-官网|下载.

I gained an M.Eng. degree in Naval Architecture in 2010 from the University of 天发娱乐棋牌_天发娱乐APP-官网|下载, including a research project concerning modelling of tidal turbines, and a group design project in the area of low-carbon shipping.

Following this I studied for a Ph.D. in computational fluid dynamics within the Fluid Structure Interactions Group at the University of 天发娱乐棋牌_天发娱乐APP-官网|下载. The project concerned modelling noise radiated by tidal turbines.

I am now a Research Engineer at MARIN, in the Netherlands,

working on hydrodynamics and hydroacoustics of propellers,

as well as Visiting Reseacher within the FSI Group.

Research interests

My research interests and experience include:

  • Large eddy simulation applied to maritime flows
  • Broadband noise of propellers and turbines
  • Modelling of tidal turbines
  • Propeller cavitation
  • Low carbon shipping technologies
  • Ship model testing

PhD research

"Large eddy simulations of inflow turbulence noise: application to tidal turbines" (2014); supervised by Professor Stephen Turnock and Professor Victor Humphrey; funded by UoS, QinetiQ and dstl

Research group

Maritime Engineering

Research project(s)

Predicting tidal turbine noise for environmental impact assessment

I have assisted with the following undergraduate classes:

  • Ship studies
  • Computational methods for ship design
  • Ship design
  • Resistance and propulsion
  • Concept design

Also a session leader for the postgraduate course “Presenting your research”.
