Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA)

What is the DSA?

The Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) is a non-repayable government grant to help cover costs related to a student's studies, which they may have as a direct result of a disability.

Students with a disability, long-term health condition, mental health condition or specific learning difference (such as Dyslexia), may be eligible to apply for additional funding through the DSA.??Supporting evidence is required to apply for DSA.???

Students may receive DSA on its own or alongside any student finance loan.

What can DSA pay for?

DSA can help towards the cost of:

  • Specialist one-to-one (non-medical) help,?such as mentoring, study skills, notetaker support, specialist support professional for students with sensory impairments.
  • Specialist equipment, such as assistive technology (AT), software, ergonomic equipment.
  • General allowance(s), such as printing, travel.??????

When should students apply for the DSA?

  • To get the maximum benefit, we encourage students to apply as early as possible.
  • Students can apply before their course starts or any time during their course.
  • Self-financed, part-time undergraduate, or postgraduate students need to reapply each year.

How do students apply for the DSA?

  • The application process depends on the funding body students are applying through.
  • Students receiving Student Finance can typically apply online.
  • Other students will need to complete a DSA application form.
  • Supporting evidence is required to apply for DSA.

The Student Disability and Inclusion Team have put together a step-by-step overview of the DSA process to support and guide students through the DSA application process.
