About this course
Study the brain's development, structure and function on this MSci Neuroscience degree. Discover the processes behind neurological disorders. You'll explore subjects as diverse as biochemistry, neurophysiology, and neural circuits controlling behaviour. This master's will open the door to scientific or clinically-related postgraduate research. It can also lead to a range of careers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.
You'll explore the foundations of biomedical sciences in year 1, then increase your neuroscience specialisation as you progress. Finally, in year 4 you'll complete an individual research project to prepare you for a career in neuroscience or further study.
Knowledge of fundamental sciences will help you master this interdisciplinary subject. Your work will be supported by lectures and seminars on the latest research topics and techniques, and delivered by leading researchers.
You'll study in the Life Sciences building, a state-of-the-art laboratory, teaching and research space. It's designed to support cross-disciplinary work in biological sciences and related disciplines.
As part of your degree you can:
- spend a year working in the pharmaceutical industry between years 2 and 3
- spend a semester at a partner university abroad during year 2
Practicals which use animals or their tissues are an important part of the course. These practicals follow ethical policies and we'll make adjustments for you if you have valid concerns about taking part.

Course structure
This balanced programme gives you the skills and knowledge required for a neuroscience career. You’ll benefit from a combination of lectures, tutorials, practical classes, coursework and research-based projects.
In year 3 you’ll complete a research project in an area of interest.
In your final year you’ll undertake an individual, extended, research-based project and a library-based dissertation. You'll also prepare critiques on research seminars you have attended.
Throughout your studies, you’ll consolidate your knowledge through independent reading.
You do not need to select your modules when you apply. Your academic tutor will help you to customise your course.
Year 1 overview
You’ll study a range of topics, giving you a solid grounding in the major concepts and principles of neuroscience. These include:

Year 2 overview
