We are aware that we prematurely contacted some Windows users this morning about booking an appointment to replace their Windows 10 device, which cannot be upgraded to Windows 11. We apologise for any confusion caused. There is no immediate action required, and we will be in contact with further information for colleagues shortly. ?
What is Windows 11, and how will this affect me??
Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 10 on 14 October 2025, and as a result any University managed devices running Windows 10 will need to be upgraded to Windows 11, or replaced, as they will pose a risk to the University’s technical infrastructure. You can find out more about the upgrade on our previous Windows 11 SUSSED post.?
Whilst there is no immediate action for you to take, we have listed below some actions which you will be asked to?carry out in the coming weeks. We will contact colleagues about these actions in due course.?
What will I need to do??
You will need to take different action depending on the device you use. Please read the information below carefully to identify your next step:?
- If your device can be upgraded to Windows 11
If your Windows device can be upgraded, you will soon see a Windows upgrade icon on your desktop. You will be able to initiate the upgrade by clicking on this icon. Please note that the icon can take several days to appear on your desktop. You will also need to be on campus to perform the upgrade.?
Read the Windows 11 upgrade article on the KnowledgeBase for information on how to update your device to Windows 11, including pictures of the icon, and the steps you should take before you start the process.?
- If your device needs to be replaced
If your device is not compatible with Windows 11, you will have received a ServiceNow ticket in your name this morning, to schedule a device replacement appointment. You will have received an email about the ticket from ServiceLine, with your device asset number, school/department, and location in the subject line. You do not need to do anything at this stage, and we will be in touch over the coming weeks with further information following the ticket.?
We are aware that some users may have more than one device, however our focus is currently on replacing primary devices.?
Further information?
You can find more about Windows 11 on the Windows 11 SharePoint site.?
If you experience any issues during the upgrade process, or you have any questions, you can contact ServiceLine by email at ServiceLine@soton.ac.uk, by phone on 023 8059 5656, or by using their online chat service.?
