Professor Barrie Houlihan, Professor of Sport Policy at Loughborough University, will present this year’s Sir James Matthews Annual Education Lecture on Tuesday 17 March.
?
The lecture – ‘An evaluation of English/UK sport policy: successful – but only in parts’ – will examine three elements of current English and, to a more limited extent, UK sport policy: school sport, sport for all/mass participation and (UK) elite sport.
?
It is argued that the substantial investment in the infrastructure of English sport and UK elite sport has produced considerable benefits especially for young people in schools and for aspiring Olympians and Paralympians. However, against this background of achievement there remain a number of concerns which Professor Houlihan will outline in his talk.
?
The presentation will conclude with recommendations for protecting the gains made over recent years and for strengthening the capacity of sport to lobby effectively on behalf of mass participation objectives.

The free lecture takes place in Building 32 from 5.15pm. Please apply online by visiting www.education.soton.ac.uk/rsvp
